Before
The same family had lived here for nearly seventy years. When the house was sold in 2023 it was still the original, untouched.

The idea
A single-storey mid-century house by Richard Frazer, built in 1956–57 for the producer Stanley Rubin and the actress Kathleen Hughes: a low roof, a stone wall, glass to the garden.

The intervention
The house was rebuilt to the studs. Terrazzo floors throughout, a new kitchen, a glass-lined primary suite, a new freeform pool and spa, and a desert garden of cactus and boulders where the lawn had been.

Stacked stone, lacquered orange doors, terrazzo, full-height glass, a red mobile in the entry court.

The result
At golden hour the sun comes low through the hillside trees and the pool takes the whole garden. Robb Report published the house in November 2024.
